Nikon D4 in my hands
So I got to try out the D4 at the Nikon stand at photofest at the weekend. What struck me was the similarity to the D3s/x while they look to have reduced the no. of buttons on the camera, it appears that the menus are slower to run now. Maybe this can be fixed in a future update. There appears to be a few bugs in the firmware as well you can’t scroll in and out when reviewing an image as before. Overall I would hold off upgrading. I tried it with a 18-55/1.8 lens (need to check) indoors and a lot if noise at Iso 200 under fluorescent light, but maybe settings needed tweaked.
Adobe Creative Cloud
So it appears that Creative Cloud members may get new features soon and that ultimately the boxed product will differ from the cloud version.
See here form the faq on the Creative cloud from Adobe:
“As of now, there are no differences in the functionality or in the system requirements between the two. However, as we add more to Creative Cloud, like entirely new applications or software features that we deliver to Creative Cloud members first, it is possible that the functionality of Creative Cloud will be different from the software you buy in a box.”
Photoshop CS6 to upgrade or not to upgrade.. you decide !
So i spent the weekend reviewing CS6 and in a nutshell I’m disappointed. While the sneak peaks in Adobe Labs a few months ago whetted the appetite, what’s in the beta is a lot disappointing. I know Adobe usually hold something back for the final release, so i hope it’s something good, but my initial thoughts are it’s not worth the upgrade for day-to-day users. It’s more like CS4, OK but wouldn’t bother. My only positive note is the background saving which is great and does speed up your workflow. A lot has been made of the blurring, but onone and nik software have had this technique in their software for years, so if you wanted it you’d have it by now, so since you made the investment int heir products, you’d be wasting money to upgrade for the same product essentially.
I do like the ability to change architectural type photos, but it’s a niche area and it alone wouldn’t justify the upgrade. What i am most annoyed with is Adobe Camera Raw, it automatically adjusts you raw file upon opening and in the beta, i have to go back and change the raw files back to ACR 2010 version to see the clipping for every photo, hopefully in the final release they can set this as a default in preferences or in the fly out menu, but for now you have to do it for each image. The problem here is that ACR decides how to handle your image, it takes your input and artistic freedom away to what it’s algorithm thinks is a more acceptable photo. Not sure i agree with this approach Adobe, but we’ll see what ships int he final version. just my 2c for the moment.
Nikon D3s Autofocus settings
Ok, so i’ve been struggling on getting tack sharp settings on my D3s and it was annoying me. Moreover the amount of possible settings in the body never mind the lens was another battle, but thankfully i have found help via well known Nikon shooter Ken Rockwell. thanks Ken for posting your D3 settings, i am using them on my D3s and getting for more reliable shots especially for the kids !!
